today is earth day.

the annual event demonstrates support for environmental protection. but even though the current fuel crisis is revealing how deep we’re still depending on fossil fuels, instead of finally cutting ties we’re throughing even more money into an industry, which is destroying our planet on different levels and thereby our future.

planetary boundaries are a framework to describe limits to the impacts of human activities on the earth system. beyond these limits, the environment may not be able to continue to self-regulate. this would mean we will leave the period of stability, in which human society developed.

1. climate change: exceeded

2. change in biosphere integrity: exceeded

3. land system change: exceeded

4. freshwater change: exceeded

5. modification of biogeochemical flows: exceeded

6. ocean acidification: exceeded

7. increase in atmospheric aerosol loading

8. stratospheric ozone depletion

9. introduction of novel entities: exceeded
